Oligomerix has discovered that tau acquires a novel enzymatic function upon formation of certain tau oligomer species. In this particular configuration tau becomes a protease enabling it to cut itself, leading to irreversible loss of function. Tau protease has been shown to cut other important neuronal proteins which may contribute to its neurotoxic characteristics.

The Company has characterized the proteolytic activity of tau oligomers and has developed methods to select inhibitors for drug discovery. Monoclonal antibodies specific for tau oligomer autoproteolytic fragments have also been developed and can be used as biomarkers for this target.
